Plextek develops customisable in-vehicle telematics unit based on
Wavecom technology
Proven, ready to manufacture design provides rapid time-to-market
3GSM World Congress 2005, Stand G46, Hall 2
Cannes, 14th February 2005: Plextek has developed a reference
design for an automotive on-board telematics unit based on Wavecom technology,
as a first step in the partnership between the two companies. The cost-effective
platform offers a fully customisable and proven telematics solution
that is ready to manufacture and therefore provides a rapid time-to-market.
The unit incorporates a wide range of on-board features in addition
to the GSM/GPRS wireless connectivity, including GPS positioning, data
processing and storage, an odometer and a smart card reader. This makes
it an ideal solution for toll systems as well as for fleet management
providers and transport ministries.
The reference design uses existing blocks of IP from both companies
and therefore has been developed in a short timescale. In addition to
its on-board features, which can be remotely upgraded with the latest
software, it offers numerous value-added options such as FM radio, CD
and MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free operation and
an external audio input. Based on Wavecom modules, the unit is compatible
with GSM/GPRS and CDMA, as well as DSRC wireless standards.
The platform is a 1-DIN unit, which makes for easy in-vehicle mounting,
and can be adapted to align with new European Union services, such as
the eCAll and eSafety programmes. It is available in two main formats,
either with a very low bill of materials (BOM) or with a high sensitivity
GPS system.
The in-vehicle unit will be displayed on both the Plextek and Wavecom
stands (G42, Hall 2 and B25, Hall 1 respectively) at 3GSM World Congress
2005.
